Neuropsychological Assessment

Fuller Psychological and Family Services (FPFS) specializes in comprehensive neuropsychological outpatient evaluations for children, adolescents, and adults. If you or someone you know is struggling with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, intellectual disability disorder, communication disorder, autism spectrum disorder, or a specific learning disorder, a neuropsychological assessment is the first step to diagnosis and treatment. Evaluations can also diagnose bipolar disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders.

A typical evaluation includes assessment of these functions:

  • General intellectual functioning
  • Academic skills (reading, writing, math)
  • Attention/concentration
  • Learning and memory
  • Language skills
  • Visuoperception and visuospatial skills
  • Motor skills
  • Behavioral and emotional functioning
  • Social functioning

An initial interview is done to obtain a detailed developmental history and to clarify concerns and identify goals for the assessment. Depending on the individual’s needs, some areas may be evaluated in more depth than others. The initial interview is followed by 12 hours of testing, usually done over 2 days on a Monday and Wednesday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm with a lunch break.

Results of an assessment will assist in the following areas:

  • Understanding developmental, neurological, and medical issues
  • Identifying an individual’s strengths and weaknesses
  • Addressing academic, social, and emotional issues
  • Providing a better understanding of the individual’s behaviors and learning styles, which will help teachers, therapists, and physicians provide appropriate treatments, interventions, and accommodation

Dr. Stacy Amano, Director of Assessment for FPFS, utilizes trained student assessment clerks (Fuller Graduate School of Psychology students who have their master’s degree in clinical psychology and are working on their doctorate) to do most of the testing. She closely supervises these students and is very involved throughout the process.
