Baines Chair of Religion\, Baylor University) shares his story of trying to find a home in America as a Vietnamese war refugee. He will share different parts of his journey in America and how Christianity gave him a way of negotiating the many challenges that come with immigrant Asian American life. He will close with a few comments on the state of American antiracism\, and the temptations and opportunities American racial politics presents. \nJonathan Tran\, Associate Professor of Philosophical Theology and George W. Baines Chair of Religion\, Baylor University \n  \n11:30 am–1:00 pm: Asian American Theology Lecture: “More Than You Can Ask or Imagine: God’s Great Hope for the Asian American Church” \nTravis Auditorium \nJonathan Tran\, author of Asian Americans and the Spirit of Racial Capitalism\, will present the Asian American church as precariously positioned at the margins of America’s race wars\, marginalized by antiracism after having been first marginalized by racism. The lecture will argue that it is from this precarious position that the Asian American church offers a surprising way forward past our racial culture wars. SUMMARY:Fully Seen: Race Conscious Therapy for Asian Americans
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Asian American Christian Counseling Services and the Asian American Center at Fuller  \nCOURSE DESCRIPTION\nThis 4-hour workshop will support the clinical development of therapists working with a primarily Asian American client base.  Presenters will discuss (1) the intersection of Christian identity and racialization and the impact this has on Asian American family life; (2) how structural racism impacts interpersonal relationships at home and at church; and (3) how fostering cultural humility allows the clinician to broach issues of race in the therapy room. \nCOURSE OBJECTIVES\n-Participants will be able to describe how racialization and white normativity impacts the Asian American family.\n-Participants will be able to explain how structural racism unfolds in interpersonal relationships.\n-Participants will be able to practice clinical skills that welcome discussions of race and racial identity in the therapy room. \n\n\nCEU (LCSW\, LMFT\, LPCC’s only): $139\nNon-CEU:  $119\nStudent:  $65\n\nCONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS: 4 CE hours available for LCSWs\, LMFTs and LPCCs. \nRegistration deadline: 9/18/19\, at midnight. No walk-in registration available.
