For various reasons (historical\, socio-political\, and cultural)\, this dependency is often heightened in the Black community.  Dr. Dwight Radcliff (Asst. Provost of the Pannell Center for African American Church Studies and Asst. Professor of Mission\, Theology & Culture) invites you engage in a conversation on how we can center Jesus in our faith\, amidst and after these difficult times. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEpc-igrjwqHte3DYsDnY0RKSSBH1oJQbkS \n  \nAsian American Ministry in the Age of COVID-19 with Dr. Daniel D. How can one translate that knowledge of what one should be doing\, to a motivation to practice? A first step is to understand the psychological science behind these suggestions. This hour-long presentation with Dr. Cynthia Eriksson will offer a basic framework of science-based resilience strategies that resonate with Christian faith and practice. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwldeGuqz4jHtNT0mcITe9FlorF7ddYaTS2 \n  \nFlourishing in the Third Third of Life with Dr. Mark Roberts \nToday\, approximately 10\,000 people in the U.S. will turn 65. The popular cultural narrative says their time of fruitfulness is over. But Scripture offers a different vision\, a vision of flourishing in the “third third” of life. Dr. Mark Roberts will lead a conversation that will equip you to serve the “third thirders” in your ministries as well as think in new ways about your own future. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEudO6rqjMjGtGacc2Bf7p0jz_OrGC8g-Qj \n  \nHow to Understand My Calling and Career in Times of Chaos with Rev. Mary Ellen Azada \nIn this season\, some may be wondering how to begin\, build\, or reimagine their careers. In this webinar\, the Fuller Careers and Personal Development office will share some ideas on how to understand calling by merging our Christian understanding of God and self with career theories that promote adapting and thriving in the midst of chaos. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEtd-6oqDsvGdLIeAAgqZqXMCvJpHwk8qbv \n  \nFuller Youth Institute: Faith in an Anxious World with Dr. Kara Powell \nAnxiety and depression are on the rise\, dominating the ways young people talk about their generation. While leaders and parents are becoming more aware of these problems\, they often aren’t sure how to respond. In this webinar with Dr. Kara Powell\, Executive Director of the Fuller Youth Institute\, discusses empowering language and tools to respond to young people\, making anxiety a part of conversations about discipleship and holistic\, faithful living. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUvc-yurzgqG9dY7FkEXlrbcayIaFA3tYtB \n  \nLeadership for a Time of Pandemic with Dr. Tod Bolsinger \nIn just a few weeks\, everything changed. Hopes that we would soon return to normal quickly faded as the COVID-19 pandemic swept the world. Christian leaders have been forced to deal with the loss of in-person gatherings\, devastating financial hits\, and the heightened anxiety of facing a future with no clear understanding of what it may look like. In this webinar\, Dr. Tod Bolsinger\, author of Leadership for a Time of Pandemic: Practicing Resilience discusses the important topics of what ministry now requires and how those who feel the burden of leading in this unprecedented context can sure which be equipped for their calling. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJYsdu6rqTMuGtyKRw04RnSmUnVntAkOujzT \n  \nWhat Would Jesus Say to Alumni? Fuller Graduates and the Coming Reign of God with Dr. Amos Yong \nWhat would Jesus say to alumni? We actually know from what St. Luke tells us at the beginning of his sequel to the life\, ministry\, and teachings of Jesus\, and this also may continue to guide our lives and ministry and witness no matter how long it’s been since we received our Fuller degree. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwkceCgqzstGtA903clSjs53oEpZq3D6JyD \n  \nFuller’s New Vision for Students and Alumni Post COVID-19: Perspective from Korean Studies Center with Dr. Sebastian Kim \nAs most theological seminaries around the world are facing a challenging time\, Fuller is going through a transformative period. In what way does Fuller support and enhance the churches in Korea\, Korean churches in the USA\, and Korean missionaries? In this interactive session\, Dr. Sebastian Kim\, assistant provost for the Korean Studies Center will talk about Fuller’s new vision and\, in the light of that vision\, discuss practical means to navigate the new reality post COVID-19. \nTo register\, please visit: \nhttps://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIsc-GqqD8jHdTR0MhaornWg9-L_QniBgwM

SUMMARY:2019 Missiology Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Techno-Sapiens in a Networked Era: Becoming Digital Neighbors\nHow does social media enable or constrain me in loving my (digital) neighbor? \nThe 2019 Missiology Lectures will look at how social media shapes human interaction\, and\, more specifically\, at the implications of social media platforms for cross-cultural or interreligious encounter. \nJoin us for a gathering of leading scholars of technology as it relates to theology\, religion\, and formation\, to explore the ways in which modern technology is neither solely a dehumanizing force in the world nor a mere instrument for evangelizing the world\, but rather the very means by which incarnation living happens—the media in and through which human bodies love the (digital) other. \nConference attendees will talk about technology as they interact with theologians\, educators\, missionaries\, and ministry leaders\, as well as engage in hands-on Virtual Reality experiences.

SUMMARY:Payton Lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Self and Spirituality in Second Temple Judaism\nApril 3-4\, 2019\nIn the centuries following the destruction of the state of Judah\, significant changes occurred in the religious culture of early Judaism as the nation reconstituted itself. While considerable attention has been paid to the developing role of the Torah and the emergence of new forms of worship\, less attention has been given to how new forms of spirituality encouraged the development of new ways of experiencing the self\, especially in the culture of prayer. Guest lecturer\, Prof. Carol A. Newsom will help us understand how these developments form a particularly important context for the emergence of early Christian understandings of the self and its relation to God. \nThe Payton Lectures are free and open the public. As space is limited\, registration is strongly encouraged. \nSchedule of Events: \nWednesday\, April 3:  \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: When the Problem Is Not What You’ve Done but Who You Are: The Changing Focus of Atonement \n12:15 – 1:30 pm: Lunch and Conversations ($5) \nThursday\, April 4: \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Constructing Landscapes of Interiority in Second Temple Judaism \n

SUMMARY:2019 MLK Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Please join the William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies in celebrating the life and leadership of Martin Luther King Jr. We are honored to host Dr. Dwight Hopkins\, the Alexander Campbell Professor of Theology at the University of Chicago Divinity School\, as this year’s featured speaker. We are also delighted to welcome Bishop Kenneth Ulmer as the guest speaker for our Celebration Worship Service. This year we have chosen The Black Church and the Urban Poor in America as our theme. On April 4\, 1968\, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis\, Tennessee\, while fighting for a 10-cent wage increase for garbage workers—efforts by King that were part of a broader and more sustained initiative known as the Poor People’s Campaign. With over 43 million people living in poverty in the United States today\, King’s ideas still hold much power. \nThis event is open to the public but registration is required. SUMMARY:Workshop: Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Fuller’s School of Psychology and the SOP Alumni Committee is please to host Exploring the Therapy and Ethics of Forgiveness and Reconciliation\, a workshop with Dr. Terry Hargrave on Saturday\, November 17\, 2018\, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p. m. in Travis Auditorium. \nABOUT THE WORKSHOP\nThe core of forgiveness involves recovering from violation and trauma. It is often thought of as a “letting go” of pain\, anger and bitterness. However\, Dr. Hargrave will examine forgiveness as a process of “putting back” as opposed to “letting go”. “Putting back” involves restoring as much love and trustworthiness into the relationships as is feasible and desirable in an ethical and sound therapeutic manner. This is a foundational process of The Restoration Model of therapy. Attendees will understand how we suffer when love and trustworthiness are violated\, and how their restoration forms essential frameworks for identity and safety. \nDr. Hargrave will outline the four pathways or stations to forgiveness using The Restoration Model. These are: 1) Insight – focused work with the victim to be able to stop the victimizer from continuing violations; 2) Understanding – where the victim comes to understand the development\, history and limitations of the victimizer and the past legacy of the victimizer’s own victimization; 3) Giving the Opportunity for Compensation – a focus on the victim and victimizer rebuilding a trustworthy relationship through sequential interactions that build a sense of safety: 4) Overt Forgiveness – allowing victim and victimizer to confront the issue of past violations and restore their relationship through conversation and dialogue. \nAfter attending this workshop\, participants should be able to: \n\nDiscuss how love and trustworthiness are associated with identity and safety.\nIdentify how relational violations affect identity and safety.\nName at least three techniques used in therapy involving the stations of Insight and Understanding.\nIdentify therapeutic techniques used to facilitate the stations of Giving & Opportunity for Compensation.\nDiscuss how Overt Forgiveness enables victim and victimizer to cultivate relational restoration.\nDiscuss at least two difficult ethical issues in the work of therapy involving forgiveness and reconciliation.\n\nSchedule: \nRegistration – 8:00 – 8:45 a.m. \nMorning Session – 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. \nLunch – 12:30 – 1:45 p.m. ($15 or lunch on your own) \nAfternoon Session – 1:45 – 5:00 p.m. \nAlumni Reception – 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. (free) \n Pricing: \n\nFuller Alumnus: $150\nGeneral Admission: $175\nFuller School of Psychology Student: $20 (30 spaces available)\nLunch: $15\n\nRegistration is limited; early registration is strongly encouraged. \nContact sarahbucek@fuller.edu with any questions. SUMMARY:Fuller Texas Lecture Event: Christmas In America
DESCRIPTION:This fall\, Fuller Seminary Texas is hosting a lecture on Christmas in America: Why Putting Christ Back in Christmas is Not Enough. This will explore such questions as: \n\nWhat does it mean to celebrate Christmas in America? \nWhat does it look like to bear faithful witness at Christmas in our homes and churches? \nIn what ways do our celebrations lean more to the influence of Charles Dickens and Santa Claus drinking a Coca-Cola than to the birth narratives of Matthew and Luke? \nAnd why do we feel more exhausted and stressed than peaceful and nourished at Christmas?\n\nThis event is lead by Dr. David Taylor\, Director of Brehm Texas and Assistant Professor of Theology and Culture\, and will feature live performances of original Christmas hymns and songs. This event is free and open to the public. Online registration is required.

SUMMARY:Memorial Service For David Kiefer
DESCRIPTION:Dear Fuller Community\, \nThe memorial service for David Kiefer will be held on Wednesday\, planned by Gwen Fleming and Julie Tai—with Linda Kiefer’s direction. The service will include many of David’s colleagues who are eager to honor him in ways they know would suit him. The staff at Lake Avenue were eager to host the memorial in their chapel\, says Gwen\, “because of their love for David!” Of course\, what a fitting campus for this service\, where David orchestrated seamlessly so many of our commencement programs: fitting and also bittersweet. A reception will follow in Lake Avenue’s Skyroom Reception Hall. \nParking will be available adjacent to the sanctuary. \nThe David Kiefer Scholarship Fund has been established in honor of David’s forty years of service to Fuller Seminary. This is a general fund for scholarships.  Checks should be made out to Fuller Theological Seminary and marked for this purpose. \nWith you in sorrow and gratitude\, \nMark Labberton
