SUMMARY:2019 Missiology Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Techno-Sapiens in a Networked Era: Becoming Digital Neighbors\nHow does social media enable or constrain me in loving my (digital) neighbor? \nThe 2019 Missiology Lectures will look at how social media shapes human interaction\, and\, more specifically\, at the implications of social media platforms for cross-cultural or interreligious encounter. \nJoin us for a gathering of leading scholars of technology as it relates to theology\, religion\, and formation\, to explore the ways in which modern technology is neither solely a dehumanizing force in the world nor a mere instrument for evangelizing the world\, but rather the very means by which incarnation living happens—the media in and through which human bodies love the (digital) other. \nConference attendees will talk about technology as they interact with theologians\, educators\, missionaries\, and ministry leaders\, as well as engage in hands-on Virtual Reality experiences.

SUMMARY:Payton Lectures
DESCRIPTION:The Self and Spirituality in Second Temple Judaism\nApril 3-4\, 2019\nIn the centuries following the destruction of the state of Judah\, significant changes occurred in the religious culture of early Judaism as the nation reconstituted itself. While considerable attention has been paid to the developing role of the Torah and the emergence of new forms of worship\, less attention has been given to how new forms of spirituality encouraged the development of new ways of experiencing the self\, especially in the culture of prayer. Guest lecturer\, Prof. Carol A. Newsom will help us understand how these developments form a particularly important context for the emergence of early Christian understandings of the self and its relation to God. \nThe Payton Lectures are free and open the public. As space is limited\, registration is strongly encouraged. \nSchedule of Events: \nWednesday\, April 3:  \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: When the Problem Is Not What You’ve Done but Who You Are: The Changing Focus of Atonement \n12:15 – 1:30 pm: Lunch and Conversations ($5) \nThursday\, April 4: \n10:00 am – 12:00 pm: Constructing Landscapes of Interiority in Second Temple Judaism \n

SUMMARY:Black Public Theology and Race in America
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn Friday\, October 12 and Saturday\, October 13\, 2018\, Fuller Seminary’s William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies will host a public symposium on “Black Public Theology and Race in America”. Taking place on Fuller’s campus\, this two-day event will engage black scholars and black church practitioners. The symposium seeks to bring the black academy and the black church into dialogue to explore ways to distill black theology and make it accessible to the black church and community. \nEvening sessions of this event are free and open to the public. The day-time sessions are open to the public but tickets must be purchased online (discounts available for Fuller students\, alumni\, faculty\, and staff). Click the link below to view the full event schedule and register online to attend. \nPARKING\nParking is free for this event in designated lots but guests must display a parking pass on their dashboard. The designated parking lots are listed below\, as well as on the parking pass itself. Click here to download the event parking pass. \n\n235 N. El Molino\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n185 N. Madison\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n128 N. Madison\, Pasadena\, CA 91101\n\nABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM \nBlack theology’s influence in the university and seminary in providing a hermeneutic that aids in understanding the Christian faith through the lens of the black experience is well attested.  James Cone\, Cornel West\, Robert Franklin\, Jacqueline Grant\, Cheryl Sanders\, and Katie Cannon are but a few advocates\, popularizers\, and proponents of this interpretive method. \nUnfortunately\, black theology remains largely an alien intellectual avocation to most black leaders and the black church. Its influence in the black church and the black community in an era of Black Lives Matter\, is at best negligible. The symposium seeks to bring the black academy and the black church together in a dialogic conversation that will explore ways to distill black theology and make it accessible to the black church and community. \nABOUT THE PANNELL CENTER \nThe William E. Pannell Center for African American Church Studies seeks to expand the formation of today’s Christian leaders\, deepening their understanding of and engagement with the African American church and its contributions to society. Through academic\, practical\, and spiritual formation opportunities\, the center nurtures relationships between the broader church\, the Fuller community\, and the African American church\, community\, and culture. \nThe Pannell Center was birthed in 1974—initially called the Theological Studies Program for Black Ministers—largely through the efforts of former trustee and longtime faculty member William E. Pannell\, in whose honor the center was named in 2015. Its founding stemmed from a conviction that the Black church has much to contribute to the seminary experience\, a conviction that continues to guide its work today.

SUMMARY:Latino Lectures: A Church Without Borders
DESCRIPTION:Fuller Seminary’s Centro Latino is hosting the 2018 Latino Lectures “A Church Without Borders” on Fuller’s Pasadena campus October 4 & 5. The 2018 Latino Lectures will look for ways to tear down divisive walls based on enmity of race\, ethnicity\, territory\, gender\, religion\, political party\, ideology\, culture\, etc. In turn\, this conference will propose ways towards the construction of a church that transcends these walls and their corresponding policies. The Spirit of Life is a Spirit without Borders and a Church Without Borders is a church reconfigured under the logic of Pentecost (Acts 2). It is this same Spirit that will guide our conversations\, plenary sessions and spaces for mutual learning. \nFor more information\, including a full event schedule and list of guest speakers\, please visit the Latino Lectures website. \nOnline registration is required. Click below to register to attend.
