Our Christian Call to Compassion and Companionship
Christians around the world wrestle with the moral dimensions of national and international policies and practices. During the week in which many across the United States will celebrate the Declaration of Independence, with its commitments to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, many Christians are grieved about current immigration practices in light of their commitments to faithful compassion and civil engagement.
Most of us are not policy makers with the requisite education and experience for shaping strategy and executing programs related to immigration laws or appropriate processes for fair adjudication. However, we do have the competence and should have the commitment to insist on ethical and humane principles that do not terrorize and traumatize children and adults. The integrity of our Christian witness in a fractured and fearful world requires followers of Jesus to call for reasonable resolutions that provide security and stability for all.
Governments have the responsibility to uphold law, security, and order. However, these aims must be pursued in a manner that reflects the values of dignity, compassion, and fairness. Policies that separate families, detain children, deny due process, or force the return of individuals to unsafe environments do not reflect God’s justice.
Scripture is unequivocal in its call to welcome the stranger, to protect the vulnerable, and to seek justice for the marginalized. Jesus Christ was a refugee as a child (Matthew 2:13–15). As an adult, he said to his disciples, “I was a stranger and you welcomed me” (Matthew 25:35). God’s heart for the outsider is undeniably clear.
Observing laws, borders, and national sovereignty is appropriate. However, these things should never become instruments of injustice or excuses for indifference. All Christians should be troubled by words and actions that dehumanize migrants, weaponize fear, and disregard the image of God in every person.
Christians are not first citizens of any nation-state but citizens of the Kingdom of God. Our allegiance is to Christ, who broke down the dividing walls of hostility (Ephesians 2:14) and called us to be reconcilers. We are not called to participate in or tolerate fear and exclusion.
Christians and churches should stand in solidarity with immigrants and refugees in their communities through advocacy, aid, pastoral care, and companionship.
Christians and churches should courageously call on political leaders to shape and steward humane and fair immigration policies and practices.
Christians and churches should commit themselves to hospitality, which is central to our identities as disciples of Jesus.

Nuestro llamado cristiano a la compasión y al compañerismo
Los(as) cristianos(as) de todo el mundo lidian con las dimensiones morales de las políticas y prácticas nacionales e internacionales. Durante la semana en que muchos(as) en Estados Unidos celebrarán la Declaración de Independencia, con sus compromisos con la vida, la libertad y la búsqueda de la felicidad, muchos cristianos(as) se lamentan por las prácticas migratorias actuales, a pesar de sus compromisos con la compasión fiel y el compromiso cívico.
La mayoría de nosotros(as) no somos legisladores con la formación y la experiencia necesarias para diseñar estrategias y ejecutar programas relacionados con las leyes de inmigración o los procesos adecuados para una adjudicación justa. Sin embargo, tenemos la competencia y debemos comprometernos a insistir en principios éticos y humanos que no aterroricen ni traumaticen a niños(as) y adultos. La integridad de nuestro testimonio cristiano en un mundo fragmentado y temeroso exige que los seguidores de Jesús exijamos soluciones razonables que brinden seguridad y estabilidad a todos(as).
Los gobiernos tienen la responsabilidad de mantener la ley, la seguridad y el orden. Sin embargo, estos objetivos deben perseguirse de una manera que refleje los valores de la dignidad, la compasión y la justicia. Las políticas que separan a las familias, detienen a menores, niegan el debido proceso o fuerzan el retorno de personas a entornos inseguros no reflejan la justicia de Dios.
Las Escrituras son inequívocas en su llamado a acoger al forastero, proteger a los vulnerables y buscar justicia para los marginados. Jesucristo fue un refugiado de niño (Mateo 2:13-15). De adulto, dijo a sus discípulos: «Fui forastero y me acogieron» (Mateo 25:35). El deseo de Dios por el forastero es innegablemente claro.
Respetar las leyes, las fronteras y la soberanía nacional es apropiado. Sin embargo, estas cosas nunca deben convertirse en instrumentos de injusticia ni excusas para la indiferencia. Todos(as) los(as) cristianos(as) deberían sentirse preocupados por las palabras y acciones que deshumanizan a los(as) migrantes, instrumentalizan el miedo y menosprecian la imagen de Dios en cada persona.
Los(as) cristianos(as) no somos, ante todo, ciudadanos(as) de ningún estado-nación, sino ciudadanos(as) del Reino de Dios. Nuestra lealtad es a Cristo, quien derribó los muros divisorios de la hostilidad (Efesios 2:14) y nos llamó a ser reconciliadores. No estamos llamados a participar ni a tolerar el miedo ni la exclusión.
Los(as) cristianos(as) y las iglesias deben solidarizarse con los(as) inmigrantes y refugiados(as) en sus comunidades mediante la defensa de sus derechos, la ayuda, la atención pastoral y el compañerismo.
Los(as) cristianos(as) y las iglesias deberían pedir valientemente a los(as) líderes políticos que diseñen y gestionen políticas y prácticas de inmigración humanas y justas.
Los(as) cristianos(as) y las iglesias deben comprometerse con la hospitalidad, que es central para nuestra identidad como discípulos de Jesús.

국내 및 국제 정책과 방침의 도덕적 측면에 대해 세계 각지의 많은 기독교인들이 고민하고 있습니다. 이번 주에, 미국 전역의 많은 사람들은 생명과 자유와 행복 추구에 대한 헌신이 담겨있는 독립 선언을 기념하겠지만, 또한 많은 기독교인들은 현재 진행되는 이민법 관련 정책을 바라보며, 어떻게 진실된 동정심을 전달하며 또한 시민으로서 의무를 다할지에 대해서 많이 안타까워 하고 있습니다.
우리의 대부분은 이민법이나 공정한 판결을 위한 적절한 절차와 관련된 전략을 수립하고 프로그램을 실행하는 데 필요한 교육과 경험을 갖춘 정책 입안자가 아닙니다. 그러나 우리는 어른 어린이 할것없이 그들의 안전을 위협하고 트라우마를 남기지 않는 도덕적이고 인도적인 원칙을 고수할 역량과 의지를 가지고 있어야만 합니다. 분열되고 두려움에 찬 세상속에서, 우리 기독교인들의 간증이 진실되기 위해서는, 모두에게 안전과 안정을 제공하는 합리적인 해결책을 예수님의 제자들이 요구해야만 합니다.
정부는 법, 안보, 그리고 질서를 수호할 책임이 있습니다. 그러나 이러한 목표는 존엄성, 연민, 그리고 공정함이라는 가치를 반영하는 방식으로 추구되어야 합니다. 가족을 분리하고, 아이들을 구금하고, 적법적인 절차를 거부하고, 개인을 위험한 환경으로 돌려보내도록 강요하는 정책들은 하나님의 정의를 반영하지 않습니다.
성경은 낯선 사람을 환대하고, 취약한 사람을 보호하며, 소외된 사람들을 위한 정의를 추구하라는 분명한 메시지를 담고 있습니다. 예수 그리스도도 어렸을 때 난민이셨으며 (마태복음 2:13-15), 어른이 되셔서도 그분은 제자들에게 “내가 나그네 되었을 때에 너희가 나를 영접하였느니라” (마태복음 25:35) 라고 말씀하셨습니다. 소외된 자들을 향한 하나님의 마음은 부인할 나위 없이 분명합니다.
법, 국경, 그리고 국가의 주권을 준수하는 것은 마땅한 일입니다. 그러나 이러한 것들이 결코 불의의 도구가 되거나 무관심에 대한 변명이 되어서는 안됩니다. 이민자를 비인간화하고, 두려움을 무기로 삼고, 모든 사람 안에 내제된 하나님의 형상을 무시하는 말과 행동에 대해 모든 그리스도인들은 경각심을 가져야만 합니다.
그리스도인의 시민권은 어떤 국가나 민족에 속하기에 앞서서 하나님 나라에 속해 있습니다. 우리의 충성은 적대감의 벽을 허무시고 (에베소서 2:14) 우리를 화해자로 부르신 그리스도께 있습니다. 우리는 두려움과 차별에 참여하거나 용납하도록 부르심을 받지 않았습니다.
기독교인들과 교회들은 옹호, 지원, 목양, 또한 친구관계를 통해 지역 사회의 이민자들과 난민들과 함께 연대해야 합니다.
기독교인들과 교회들은 인도적이고 공정한 이민 정책과 관행을 입안하고 집행해 줄 것을 정치 지도자들에게 담대하게 촉구해야 합니다.
기독교인들과 교회들은 예수님의 제자들로서 우리 정체성의 핵심인 환대에 헌신해야 합니다.
풀러 신학교는 성경 말씀과 그 권위에 충실하여 세상에 대한 동정을 드러내고 세상에서 예수를 증거하는 기독교 지도자들을 양성하고자 합니다. 우리는 성경적 신뢰, 신학적 지혜, 그리고 목회적 담대함을 바탕으로 복잡한 현실에 맞서도록 부르심을 받았습니다.
